Rooster Chat

Tons of hawks, and have also seen owls, usually early in mornings.

I had a hen ho was like this, just about i novemeber. She had a much worse case.

I put some peroxide on it,and coconut oil.I would keep him inside but he won't seem to stop crowing,so out to the yard he goes.

I have 7 bantam roosters out in my large shed, which is where my large breed flock lives. There are also 5 large breed roosters out there too. The key is to have plenty of room and places for them to get away from each other. Bantam rooster are bit more scrappy than large breeds. My bantam roosters will often fight in spring to establish dominance where my large breeds don't.

Funny thing is that my boss roo is a fuzz ball little black Silkie, named Larry....he's boss over a huge white rock, a equally huge Brahma and three teenage mutts...he was dethroned last year by the Brahma...but the tables have turned and he's back on top! He's a great boy!

Yup! As my dear deceased husband always said...."It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog!" And that statement rings so true with chickens! Wish I had a video of Larry (the Silkie) taking on BooBoo (the Brahma)....at the height of the conflict Boo would jump up to kick Larry! Only to have Larry duck between Boo's legs, coming out behind him and quickly boot him in his fluffy butt. That would startle Boo, but by the time he turned around, Larry would be ready for him! He would leap up and hit that big Brahma square in the chest...unfortunately he would just bounce off of Boo...which only wore Larry out...physically his attacks seemed to make as much of an impression on Boo as I would make if I attacked a Round Bail of hay...I broke up the conflicts if I could....poor little Silkie didn't seem to know when to take a break. I figured if he kept it up, he might drop dead of exhaustion...Well, it's a year later, and the flock dynamics have gone through a change...Larry's back on top and the two big boys are acting as his backup, keeping the cockrels in line. The hens are happy! That's what really matters!
