Rooster Chat

I've got some little Serama Roos that sound like squeaky toys!! Honestly they never fail to make me laugh, they are so sincere...going through all the usual preparations...the stretching and fluffing...taking in a deep breath! And finally giving it their all!!! Only to sound exactly like a squeaky toy!!! You're tempted to reach in an give one a squeeze, just to see if it will work!!!

Here's just a cute thing I saw today:

I have a "house rooster" who sleeps indoors at night. Keeps the crowing down in the morning and gives him a break from being chased by the main rooster (who sleeps in the coop with the girls).

It's been raining more than usual and a tiny neighborhood cat has taken up residence on my back porch. The rooster is VERY wary of the cat, and she couldn't care less about the rooster. They've spent some afternoons together on the porch in the rain and the rooster seems to tolerate the cat now.

This morning, a different, large male stray cat came on the porch and started harassing the tiny cat. The house rooster went berserk! He poofed up and chased after the huge male stray, making a racket and chasing him off. After, he came back and strutted in front of the tiny cat, who is apparently his friend now!

Roosters are very social animals. They never cease to annoy and amaze me practically simultaneously. I'm getting him girls and a coop of his own soon. But at least he's got his friend!

I have three roosters; a Silver Laced Wyandotte (Kiwi), a Salmon Faverolle (Winston), and a little Birchen Cochin bantam (Mr. Stella). They all get along pretty well after they established pecking order of course, which got pretty brutal, the SLW is on the top then the cochin bantam, then the Faverolle. The SLW and Faverolle were supposed to be girls...but the bantam was of course a 50/50 because he's a bantam so he came straight run I was positive he was a girl (hence the name Stella) but then he was rooster (changed to Mr. Stella).

Is there any way to train a rooster NOT to attack my kids. We have one that's very aggressive. He's a beauty and I'd like to keep him but I can't have him chasing my kids around the yard anymore.

Get your kids some fishing nets for protection and to catch him if he's coming at them.

Roosters and kids aren't always a good mix because children can be erratic in their movements which can trigger a rooster to go in defensive mode. Roosters can seriously hurt kids, so if it continues you may need to keep him locked up if you wish to keep him. Children have had their faces and eyes scratched by attacking rooster.
