Rooster Complaint. ...

I think part of the reason I'm annoyed is that he crows a max of four times (about ten or so crows and it lasts maybe 3min tops) over a four hour period. Usually he only does it once or twice though... and at the same time there are people working on motorbikes, running machinery etc all of which are louder. I suspect it's the new next door neighbours or the back ones (who wanted to buy part of our land but I said no) but both work 9-5 jobs so wouldn't even be in to hear him except weekend. I've asked both but they've both denied it... plus every other neighbour within hearing distance

Maybe they have rooster PTSD- rooster"mares" or rooster "phobia" - I don't know.. bring them a pie... smile and make friends... bring them some "farm fresh eggs" maybe you will make a friend or worst case scenario.. they will still continue to complain... sometimes people are not as smart as our pets... but they may be educable...

I measured 80bd on his very loudest crow... right next to me... from just ten feet away it was less and from my back door (the closest house to him) it was more like 60-70db background noise was about 40-50s. .. but with other sounds louder than him. (Like one of the nicer neighbours motorcycle they go out on every morning at 5am). Measured on a proper gadget that I can't think of the name for ><

It should basically just come down to noise.. but I think he's pretty chilled with crowing tbh and personally find it daft. He does have a no crow collar but it seems to slip and occasionally he gets a few loud ones out. His usual with the collar are much quieter. The 80db was a "slipped crow" it is on correctly it just seems to be how he's made that it slips... my old roo never had that trouble

If you're allowed a Rooster and sounds like you're being very considerate of your neighbors. You should ask the Council who complained, if they won't tell you then write a letter & have the Council deliver to the complainer. I'd rather hear your Rooster next door than sounds of my neighbor messing with his Harley. THAT sound is NOISE.

I live in a residential area (10K sq ft) that is zoned AG, we're allowed chickens but I refrain from Roosters out of neighbor consideration plus I don't want fertile eggs but we got neighbors that have NO consideration of the NOISE they produce with their cars/motorcycles and barking dogs. Makes me considier a Rooster, ha ha

So and update... we found out who the complaint was coming from and now it gets very odd... they are not even on my street and at least 50 houses away. You can't even hear the rooster from there! I don't know them at all and have never spoken to them until yesterday.

Yesterday I got another complaint lether. .. this time not about noise, but about rats coming from my coop. Bear in mind my coop is a solid brick shed with a concrete floor. All feed is in bins. I have never seen a single rat or any other rodent near my hens. Moaned about how ridiculous it was to a mate and they let slip with this charming lady living 50 houses away apparently being a chronic complainer/busybody and had mentioned chickens to her... long shot I thought but I went and asked.

I took an offering of eggs but she near threw them in my face.. saying my eggs are filthy and that keeping chickens caged is cruel. (I'm not sure if a 70ft long run counts as a cage!) Had a massive go at me and effectively informed me she wouldn't rest until my birds were "freed"

I told her regardless of her personal views.. I'm not doing anything illegal and if she continues to make false complaints I will report her myself for harassment!

So it looks like I have angered the local loony...

Yikes! Sorry you're having trouble with the local PETA charter :p

Perhaps she doesn't realize that some of US think caging chickens is cruel too, that's why we have BACKYARD chickens :D

She also must not realize the horrible conditions those "clean" eggs come from, or the fact that those "clean" eggs from the cruelly caged chickens are in everything from cake mix to mayonnaise.... Some people really make me wonder....

Best wishes with that; I feel for the local council having to put up with a nutjob, aside from you and your barely noticeable rooster.

So the mate was the one who informed the loony about your birds?

OyVey.!
Most complainants are just unhappy troublemakers.
You'd think the inspectors would have her number and take it into consideration.

You're dealing with a lunatic crazy person who is just taking up oxygen from normal people.

I'd get proactive, talk to the city and explain how much of an activist loon this old bitty is and get them to put her on the "pay no mind" list.

If she's that insistent she'll cause trouble no matter what. You have to discredit her to the city or she'll get her way so she'll leave them alone.

Some people aren't fit for society.

Nope loony lady complained about my chickens to to a friend so she already knew about them. .. I'm pretty well known as the local mad animal person
