I have recently started letting my rooster free range in the day, and he is always crowing! It will be 1:00 o'clock and he is still crowing. He crows at 5:00 o'clock, when the sun comes up. Is there something that he needs, or is it normal?

It is normal. Mine starts early in morning, about an hour before sunrise. The everytime one of my neighbor's rooster start crowing, mine answers back. They crow for territory, letting the hens know where he is and other reasons.

Mine start at 5am, I wake up to them... They like to comunicate with the flock, constantly establish dominance and let other roos in the area know that this is their territory.

Roosters are just so proud they have to let everyone know it.

I guess it's a function of being old, but I wake THEM up in the morning. At my age I don't sleep past 4:00 at the latest so just as soon as I can see to go ourside I go out to the coop and check on the knot-heads, and that usually gets "Beau" and "Stew" (not "Stu," "Stew", aka "Stew-the-roo") going. Beau will quiet down during the day, but whenever Stew hears me around during the day he'll crow.

Ok, thanks! I don't have the rooster with the hens, so that must be it, since there are no other roosters in the area.

I have one silkie roo and he crows every morning at 6:30 AM. He will also occasionally crow in the evening when everyone is settling down to roost for the night. I think he is a little confused about the time of day. Sounds like roosters crowing at odd hours is pretty normal. Who knows!

If your crowing rooster is the same as the one in your avatar, then I can tell you that mine is the same kind and he crows ALL DAY LONG!! Of course, I love listening to him and I don't worry about neighbors, because we don't have any!
