rooster crowing in middle of night

Because he saw or heard something that alarmed him, so he crows as a warning. This could be anything from a cat, dog, armadillo, owl, etc... that disturbed his sleep.

Or he woke up and thinks its morning. We had a rooster crow at that time all the time years ago when I was in FL. Finally firgured lights from cars doing it and neibors having parties.

Theres been more light outside we are coming out of a full moon

Our old RIR Roos would crow at any noise at night. They were better watchdogs than our dog!

Oh and last Halloween it was too funny. Evey time a trick-or-treater came up the driveway they would start crowin'! The kids would look around like "Where's the chicken?"

We live in a difficult neighborhood. When something is happening that shouldn't be happening, we put on the outside lights. My son rigged up security lights that light the place up like a used car lot.

This lets the trouble makers know that we know that they are there and we are on to them. It really send them packing.

The lights tend to wake up the chickens and set the rooster off.

If you don't want him to crow at night or early am, put him in a cage where he can't stretch his neck then he can't crow.

They'll do it anyway. They will crow when they want to. Sometimes a darkened place will stop or delay it, sometimes not. And they might crow next month, even if this month's approach worked.

3 AM is about when mine start, but they don't disturb me any more. I love the sound, and it does not wake me.

You would think they would need more sleep than that, LOL. Years ago, I had one that would escape the pen, and start about 3 AM under my bedroom window. I worked evenings, and would just get to sleep when he started. He was an attack roo, too. Stew pot time.

My rooster did that for a while... drove me nuts. He was crowing at 5:30... then 5:00.. then 4:30... etc. Thank goodness he has now seemed to settle down into a more normal crowing routine & doesn't feel the need to crow in the middle of the night or for hours on end... although a few weeks ago, my dog was hit by a car at 3:30am... I started screaming & then the rooster started crowing! In retrospect (since the dog is OK!) it was kind of silly
