We have an 11-month-old free range rooster and 15 hens, all about the same age as our rooster. Our rooster is very gentle and does an excellent jobs of looking after the hens. At night, we close them in the barn, where they have plenty of room to roost. Beginning around 3:00am, the rooster begins to crow and will row 3-4 times/hr, all night. Is this typical? Does he need something? This is our first rooster. Although our neighbors tell me they cannot hear the rooster, he keeps my husband and me awake. The roosters crows frequently during the day, but this is not a concern to us. Thanks.

16 chickens, 12 indoor cats, 2 canaries and a small organic farm.

My first rooster, Julius, just crowed every time he heard something, anything. A dog would bark in the distance and Julius would crow. He was a big boy and had a heck of a crow, it woke us up and our neighbors as well. So I sold him, just thinking he was weird, and we bought an Old English Game Bantam roo that does the same thing. But, George sounds like a squeeky toy when he crows, so he doesn't bother us as much. It may be abnormal, but I'm 2 and 0 on nightime crowers!

Both of my guys start crowing very early in the morning. Even earlier if something rouses them, such as a dog barking, lights coming on in the house, etc.

If you go out at night when your rooster begins crowing, can you hear other roosters answering in the distance? Sometimes I think they feel the need to communicate with each other, a way of saying "Hey! I'm over here!"

He may also be crowing as a warning to other animals roaming the area at night. This might be his response to suspicious sounds. Look in the dirt around your coop first thing in the morning, see if you find any other animal footprints.

I think after a while you'll learn to tune it out and continue sleeping. My roos crow off & on during the night, I only hear it if I have to get up to use the bathroom, it rarely if ever wakes me up from sleep.

My roo - Tex starts to crow if he hears any noise through the night - which at the moment is the new calves crying in their shed!! and they cry all night, so if I have to get up to feed my baby I can't sleep for all the calves braying the rooster crowing and the husband snoring!!!

I'm so tired

Kiwi...I feel your pain. Been there done that. I now buy weaned calves and have no roosters. Husband has to stay so I got ear plugs. Neighbors and I are now getting better sleep at night!

If anyone complains, put the Roo in a small enough cage at night so he can't stretch out his neck and crow.

Oh, Kiwi, that is one noisy thing I don't have....a human child! Not yet anyway! The rooster might have to go when that time comes!

Caging him might or might not work. Mi head roo also starts in the middle of the night, does not stop til bedtime. You'll get used to it and it won't disturb you. I only hear mine if I'm up for another reason, and probably don't always notice it then.
