Rooster exposed to weather. Need advice

Thanks so much for everyone's input! I decided to call our local avian resuce center and talked to the vet there, just to clarify thinigs. He said that it is perfectly safe to use the Vicks Vapo Rub and that I COULD NOT overdose him. He said to rub down his nostrils, under his wings, under his neck and also run the vaporizer with Eucolyptus smell in it. The way the Vicks works is that it helps break up the thick mucus and also helps clear out the sinuses. I am cleaning off his nostrils every few hours gently with a Q- tip because all the congeston is cutting loose from his lungs and coming out there it seems. He did have pneumonia come to find out and was wheezing very badly before but is not doing so as much today. We are also making the Terrymicin into a super strength paste, per his instructions, and givnig it every 2 hours if he starts to show distress signs. Otherwise, every 4 hours super strength paste through medicine dropper. We started all this last night and have saw a BIG improvement. He is eating chick starter mash and being fed water with apple juice through a medicine dropper every few hours. He said the apple juice will help because apparantly he was so sick he was going into shock! He actually opens up his mouth and lets me drop it in! He is still sleeping alot, though the vet said this is normal, and he told me not to change to the Tylan that the super strength we are making the Terrymicin will work just as well. They said they think he will pull through. And he answered all my questions for free so i didn't have to worry about the charge I was concerned over. I was very impressed that he showed such concern over what most of my extended family see as "just a chicken." My son was so upset over his chicken not being able to crow that he went and picked it a flower while in tears. It was sad but sweet. I will update more as things happen. The vet said it would take about a week for me to notice a very significant improvement as pneumonia takes alot out of anyone or anything.

He did verify that as I thought yesterday, the reason he feels better in spurts, is the same reason we humans do when we are sick. We get to feeling a llittle better and over do it. When the roo was feeling better yesterday he ate ALOT and then played around with his hen who is also sick and is isolated with him so they can be treated together. Apparantly when he felt a little better he over did it and exhausted himself which made him feel worse than before!

The rooster is actually doing much better now. We talked to our vet friend again, her name is Molly, I kept referring to her as a him earlier but my husband who is actually the one who knows her so well has corrected me on that. The roo and hen are both doing much better. Still using Vicks as he needs it which at this point isn't much and are forcing fluids and electrolytes with vitamins mixed in water and food. He now just has the normal cold like symptoms that come with getting over pneumonia. Thanks so much for the help!

So glad they are getting better!

Every medication for humans and animals has side effects. This includes ointments, salves, vitamins, herbal remedies and prescripton drugs. The list is usually VERY long.

I am a research nurse and have to go over these long lists of possible side effects with patients before they participate in any cancer clinical trials. The FDA requires that ALL side effects that are even possibly associated with the agent be listed. That means that even "rare but serious" side effects are listed...even if their likelihood is less than 1%.

Moderation is the key. You have to weigh the potential benefit against the possible risk.

I'm sure the Vick Vaporub is just fine...even though a bird somewhere, once-upon-time died from an overdose of camphor.

oldtimegator: I know what you mean. My son takes 17 different medicines everyday because of his disease and each and every one has side effects. One he took a while back caused him to have a petechial rash from head to toe and after 6 hours of blood work it was determined that he had a reaction to one of the safest medicines he took. The reaction was considered to be extremely rare because in only 1 in 500,00 cases it happened!
