What do you feed roosters? i am quite new at this and there is the possiblity that i will have some roosters from a straight run batch so i'm trying to learn everything about them. :rolleyes:Do you feed them layer like you do the hens? Also, are you supposed to have the rooster afraid and distant from you or can you have them friendly? I have heard that you're supposed to leave them alone but others say that they give them food which they pass on to the hens and other stuff. Any info would be wonderful.

Feed them with the flock. They eat what the others eat, no problem
You can have friendly cocks, but it is a crapshoot: some are moldable some are not. But dont keep them alone. Let them be with the flock. It's what they live for, you know...

We currently have 5 roosters, all of which are friendly. A couple will eat out of my hand, a couple will let us pick them up. We feed everyone together, and they all seem to get on well.

I don't buy anything special for the rooster, he eats layer mash and scratch (as a treat) like everyone else.

But he walks in the kitchen and eats dog food. He's the only one with temporary house visitation rights, but I suppose the dog food can't be that good for him. I just say that's his McD's Big Mac with all it's nutritional value

My rooster eats what my hens eat. He actually gets alot less treats than the hens because when I hand out treats he always lets the hens eat first. The only exception to this will be when the figs are ripe. He'll stand there and wait for me to hand him the figs and eats every one I offer.
I feel I have a good rooster/human relationship with my roo. He comes right up to me at treat time. I can pick him up when necessary and he's quiet in my arms. However the rest of the time he keeps his distance and shows respect for my (top) place in the flock. It's as if he knows that when I'm out there I am in charge. He's my second in command.
Edited for spelling.
