Rooster fight! HELP!!

Congrats! After a week at "the hospital" $400 sounds like a really good deal. A friend had raccoons break into her garage through a tiny space on the roof where the heat pump is, so even when something appears predator proof, it isn't always. Nails and screws are your critter's best friends (beside you and the vet).

I have been following this thread and I am so very happy your little guy is doing better!! I have seen many thoughts as to what happened and how it happened and I just wanted to share an excperience I had six years ago when I first got chickens. We had 5 hens and 2 roosters and everyone got along perfectly. The roosters were adults and had been raised together so they had already established their pecking order. About three weeks after getting roosters, I went out to give them their treats and whatnot only to find my big rooster dead and the smaller one injured. The injuries weren't severe or life threatening. The dead roo was against the fence and I went around to see the fence from the outside and I could tell that something had been there as the ground was messed up and I found feathers and whatnot on the outside of the fence. I had used regular chicken wire as the fencing and I believe a raccoon was able to reach through the tiny holes and get ahold of my roo. I think the smaller roo had tried to help the bigger roo and was just scratched up where as my big guy wasn't so lucky. My point being that the preditor doesnt have to actually get inside the pen or coop to hurt or kill the chickens. Needless to say I changed the fencing to a stronger type with much smaller holes. Just a thought.... I hope your little guy continues to improve!!

Thank you again for the kind thoughts! He is continuing to improve everyday! He is looking much better!! He is need of a good bath, but I want to wait for a bit so I do not irritate his healing wounds. He beak is getting some red lines in the bottom, the vet told me this is the beak growing back. His comb seems to be healing together by itself, so hopefully there is no need for stitches. I am taking him back for a checkup tomorrow so I will post an update of what the vet has to say. Thank you all again!!

We have predator proofed the coop and run, it seemed really tight before, but we nailed a few things down tighter. The wire is 1/4 in hardwire, and everything is nailed down good and tight!

Check the ground closely in your pen. Rats sometimes close the entrance to their tunnel while they are in it (I watched them do it when my turkey barn was infested). You can put something like peanut butter on the ground and invert a tub or something over it. Don't raise one end of the tub or anything, just let it lay flat. If you have rats, they'll dig under the tub and get the bait.

Just an update! He is doing GREAT! His back is healing really well, the dead skin has started to come off some! He is starting to look semi normal again! Just hoping his beak will grow back some! But he is eating and drinking just fine! I will post some pictures later so you can see the the progress he has made!
Also, Im not sure what it is with me! But I was at work yesterday (I work at a bar in the CITY) I look out the window and there is a white hen sitting on one of my costumers cars!!! So I immediately go out and catch her, she is chewed up pretty bad all on her back side! So we cleaned her last night and put some stop bleed on the wound since it was STILL bleeding when I got her home 9 hours later!! I am hoping she will be fine! An injured chicken was the last thing I expected to find at work yesterday!
