Rooster fighting chicken!! Help!

If she is female, then I love how she stands up for herself! She does look exactly like my other female silkie....(they were hatched together) but I too was confused with her fighting back. Didn't think that was typical for a female.
She looks very female to me. I've had quite a few snarky Silkie girls. Haha! They seem to always be on opposite ends of the spectrum: quiet and submissive, or bossy.

Maybe I shouldn't be assuming her gender. Perhaps Fern doesn't want to submit to the male dominated chicken world

I’m going to chime in only to say this circling behavior is exactly what my young male Japs do around the most dominant pullets, my bantam Sumatra especially. It’s only escalated to her fighting back once or twice, but they will circle and wing dance like this male here as close as they dare. She’s a very selective and firm leading lady, I’ve never once seen her mounted, though she is a very new layer yet.

Fern is a pullet. The 1:10 ratio of roosters to hens is not always correct. Some people keep pairs, trios and quartets of Roos and hens and have no problem. It depends on the rooster. I think that you may want to add some more pullets so that Pancake has a wider selection of ladies and so that he isn’t always going after Fern.

Hmm ok I'm going to look for some more girls to add to my flock. Maybe that should be my first step. Even if Fern is a female...what I'm understanding is 3 females is still not enough and we need to give Pancake a wider selection of girls. If that doesn't work and he is still hurting her then I'll have to look to re-home him.

Anyone selling/rehoming pullets on Long Island, NY? lol

I always recommend no roosters the first year. Beware of false guilt, a lot of people have it, but if you don't like a bird, let it go, and don't ask questions. People should feel guilty if they neglect birds, starve birds, abuse birds, but if they have given them a good run, and the bird does not work out, let it go. What someone else does, is not your responsibility.

Always solve problems by culling for the peace in the flock and happiness of yourself.

Thank you for your honest good advice!!

I've had roosters fight to the death. And it's usually the rooster that I really wanted to keep who gets killed. If I were you Pancake would be gone. At my place an aggressive rooster ends up in the freezer. Why wish an aggressive rooster on someone else.
I think Fern/Fernando would be a much easier chicken to keep, no matter which sex it is.
I would be having Pancake stew for dinner!

LOL it's funny because my daughter (who will be 3 in January) always loved pancake best. When I told
and she saw he was being mean to the others she was upset. I told her if he keeps hurting Fern we would have to send him to a farm. Her response....and I quote,
"No! Just send him to God!"
