Rooster foot pad swollen

Our black Orpington rooster has a swollen metatarsal pad on his foot and he seems to be limping. We tried soaking it but no change. Any suggestions on how to help him?

It could be the beginning of bumblefoot. Often times, slight swelling and a scab are the first signs of bumblefoot. I'd soak his foot in epsom salts every day or so, and see if that helps. Antibiotics like Penicillin might also help. It would be a good idea to keep him isolated from the other birds in a deep bedded cage/area so that he doesn't injure the foot worse or get the foot dirty.

Fortunately, your bird's case doesn't seem too bad yet. If you keep it clean and soak the foot, it may clear up on its own.

thank you very much for the information- I really appreciate it. We live in the mountains and the chickens are free ranged all day. They like to travel to the neighbors and walk through brush. I have a feeling that is how it is happening. I have all the products and will start the soaking tomorrow. Again, thanks!
