I want to find out more about roosters, so i can better understand mine more.

So if you have any advice you'd like to share. Please do :)

If you'd like pointers, things like-
- What do they typically like?
- What do they typically don't like?
- How to prevent most pecks (if possible).

What are you looking to do? Sounds like you want a pet?
Yes. I'm looking to keep mine as a pet.
I would like to find ways to prevent his pecks and gain his trust. I would also like to understand what roosters typically don't and do like, so i can better understand mine more. And also how to calm them down and make them feel more comfortable.

Right now he's a bit pecky, especially when he's annoyed. But calm when he's on my lap or bed. I can pet him, and he does like it. But he still gets pecky at times. I don't know if this is to be expected or not, since he's a rooster.

I am new to this. I bought two silkies a year ago. My baby girl passed away, so it's just me and him.

My daughter hatched some eggs last year 2 of the 4 hatched and they were both roos I rehomed 1 and ended up keeping 1 I had no hens so I was worried about him being lonely but he seems happy he has a great relationship with my daughter they love each other he follows her everywhere and is very affectionate if he gets a bit big for his boots she scoops him up and carrys him seems to let him no who's boss his hot a great character and makes a great pet you just have to spend alot if time building the bond good luck

If you can get him on your lap already, sounds pretty tame!
All roosters seem to have unique personalities. I wouldn't know what to tell you to help him stop from being pecky. Chickens peck as a form of communication, and I haven't heard of keeping a bird from pecking? But if you want to tame them down some more, maybe try to always treat and reward them for calm and gentle behavior?

I have two young cockerels right now who are absolute sweethearts. They greet me and are always so calm and gentle and don't fuss at all when I hold or pet them. Every now and then they want to get down, but otherwise, super friendly. One of them only pecks at me if I accidentally nick him on the comb or something, as if telling me not to 'peck' at him!! Haha.. But they're just such characters :)

One of them I ended up having to nurse to health since he was beaten up by one of my more aggressive roos, and I think me 'saving' him made him trust me more and really calm down when I handled him.. He was very skittish before.
All I can do is wish you the best of luck

I'm sorry you lost your girl...

Chickens are flock animals. I'd get him a friend. He'd do fine with another rooster - as long as you have no hens!

That being said, some roosters are just aggressive and are going to peck you. Silkies are small, but the roosters can still hurt you when they attack. I've found that my feisty rooster has decided I'm a friend and not a threat to him because I always give him a small treat whenever I see him. It will be easier if he's still young.

If you do decide to get him a friend, be sure to search how to introduce them. Whatever you decide, I wish you luck!

I think a big part in it is predisposition....... genetics. When you look at gamebirds use for fighting, they can be all out aggressive to other roosters and yet the owner has complete control of them, handling them with ease, calm as a cucumber. The key is to spend plenty of time handling them so they get used to you.
