Rooster Getting Aggressive

Henry is still in his quarters and I just use my body motion to make him back up to the other half of the space when I'm in there.

Interesting today my neighbor has some free ranging chickens that wander over to my place every day. Some hens and a couple of roosters, one a big white I'm in charge rooster and one smaller that is not. The subordinate wandered up to Henry's place and they were practicing chicken kick boxing with the chicken wire between them of course. It was interesting to watch two roosters trying to be king rooster.

Henry seems to be getting the picture that to attack me is not in the cards...however I really like the peaceful chicken yard with just pullets.

Am soooo glad that there are no free range birds anywhere near mine.

Her free ranging birds are the reason I'm a chicken rancher. One day last spring I found some eggs in my woods... I started picking them up and having them for breakfast on the weekends. Like little chicken pushers they stopped laying on my property after getting me hooked on fresh yard eggs. Kinda said to me you only get a taste now you have to buy some. So I'm standing in line at the local farm supply with my chicks and chick stuff and they can't find the price for an item the lady in front of me is buying. So she hears the chicks peeping and starts a conversation. I tell her the tale of the little chicken pushers and when I'm done she says is your last name Thornton? I say yes and she says Hi I'm your neighbor. We have been good friends ever since. Yea I'm not outgoing at all... I didn't even know how long someone had been living on that property.

What a great way to find your way in! Good story.

Just a little update on Henry, he jumps out of my way when I approach him no sticks no nothing just me approaching him sorta fast sometimes and sometimes just a step in his direction. We might be learning a thing or three. He is still a bachelor and may stay that way for a while.

Maybe you'll win this after all!

My Orpington cockerel started to become aggressive to me as he grew older but once I showed him I wasn't afraid of him and held him or backed him into a corner every time he showed dominance for a while, he began to learn he wasn't the boss. Now he's very good around me and will only attack if I'm not wearing my chicken boots.

I'm treading really carefully right now with one myself. The Faverolles cockerel in my avatar hasn't outright threatened me yet but he's a very nervous bird. His hormones came on hard over the last 2 weeks, he's frantically tidbitting everything, rocks, bits of straw, whatever he can find. Then crowing and dancing all over.

I spend time every day interrupting all that to walk through him but he startles easily so I'm not moving too fast. Trusting my gut that all the usual advice applies, just a bit slower. I talk to them before I open the door or he puffs up too much. I don't really like him crowing right under my feet, feels like a challenge. Not sure if that's correct but I get him moving when he does it. Seems to be lessening.

Much to learn.
