I have a 4 year old Cochin rooster under my care.
I raised him from a baby and had to move and leave him a year ago-
Upon return his newer owner noted he was not doing well and I see he has a bad case of bumble foot.
I do not have the money for a vet as I am a college kid- But I would love advise on how to deal with this myself.
He is obviously in discomfort walking- he is so kind and cuddly I would love to help him.
He also appears to have redness and inflamation on his feet and legs in general- I know this is sometimes due to growing feathers from their feet l but this seems like an unusual amount. Is there anything I can do to ease this discomfort?
Also, his feather casings are not crumbling off revealing new feathers- so he as a lot of incased pins. I have not seen him have this problem before- he usually molts normally. Any reason why this could be?
He is otherwise acting normal, eating and drinking. Thanks!

He has scaly leg mites for sure. Has he lost the rear toenail where the scab is? Could there be an abscess where the toenail is missing? I would begin treatment with warm soaks in either Epsom salts or water with a dab of Hibiclens, Betadine, or Dawn. Soak about 15 minutes daily, and the first time, use a toothbrush to gently loosen the scales. Apply vaseline thickly to his feet and legs. For the first week I would do this each day or at least every other day. Then weekly until new scales are growing in. For the scab, try to remove it once it has softened. Try to squeeze out any pus inside. If that doesn’t work, repeat it tomorrow. Let us know if anything comes out of the scab. Once it does apply Neosporin just to that area.

I agree, it does look like SLM. I'd treat as suggested.

Not sure what's going on the toe.
Almost looks like a debris or poop ball stuck where the nail was, but it also goes through to the other side?

I'd soak as suggested, then take some tweezers or orange stick, something like that and work on pulling/pushing and digging that material out of the toe/foot on both sides. See where that leads. It may just be a simple fact of needing to remove debris.

Take photos of what you remove and the "holes" that are left.

He's a big handsome boy. Not sure why the feather shafts are remaining. Could be he's not feeling well enough to dust bath. You can sort of comb through the feathers with your fingers to help remove some of those.
Giving him a boost with some poultry vitamins is a good idea as well, if you have those.

Keep us posted!

I have been doing soaks and all that suggested- thank you so much!
I was able to take out those bumble scabs and some gunk out of his foot. Couldn’t believe it, went all the way through. Pressed around to get as much as I thought I could. Applied Neosporin and wrapped with vetwrap to keep more gunk from getting in there. Poor boy, he did really well. Should I continue soaks after the bumble is now removed? Heres some nasty pictures following

Hey! I did post pictures of the result of removing the bumble- and the gnarly holes. See my reply to Eggcessive.

Hey! I know you suggested soaking 15 mins a day to help loosen scales. Now that he has the open wound from bumble foot- I would assume it is not recommended to soak anymore? Thank you for the help

Aww Luna is beautiful. He is a partridge Cochin ! Yours must be too. Is he pretty docile as well? I had a hen of the same breed years ago, she was gorgeous. Sadly she passed when she was younger. I would definitely want to get more.
