I noticed about 2 weeks ago that one of my 7 month old CL roosters has swollen ankle joints. It has not gotten better, and I'm not sure what to do. He has no cuts on his legs or feet, so not an infection. Could he have gout? He is eating an 18% protein grower food.

Your poor guy! If it is indeed gout, you can try some tart cherry juice or powder for him. Poultry can also take allopurinol, just like for humans, but that would be prescription onlg situation. Do you notice any white nodules on his legs/joints? Also, excess calcium can cause gout, has he been eating layer feed?

My husband has debilitating gout that has been difficult to control even on medication. I sympathize with anyone that has it, poultry or otherwise!

Thanks for your response! I will try adding some cherry juice to his water. Is there a certain amount per gallon I should add? Sadly, I can't take him to a vet for prescription medicine. He does not have any white nodules on his legs. He has never eaten layer feed, he has been on the same grower feed since he was about 3 months old.

I found on another thread the poster said they gave their rooster 2 tart cherry capsules dissolved in a tablespoon of water and gave it to him. Hopefully that helps! Here is the forum I found:
