We've never had a Rooster before but we've ordered one with the Dominiques we ordered from PP and I'm curious, how do you house your rooster? .. We do sometimes sell extra eggs for eating and while I KNOW one of my customers wouldn't care about a fertile egg, my other customer probably would -- She's an ex-city dweller who had no idea we didn't have to have a rooster to make eggs

but she's super nice and they live on the next road.

Do you ever house your Rooster seperately?

My chickens are all housed together, but the pullets are a couple months short of laying. The roo is the same age, but he's ready and rarin' to ride a hen or two. I'll let him stay with the girls unless he turns out to be too rough on 'em.

(Being new to chickens, I hope I'll recognize that problem - if it occurs - before it gets to BE a problem.)

We seperate our roosters from our hens. Right now we only have one roo, but soon it will be more. The roo is in a large run that allows him to interact with the hens, but not physically. He even shares the same coop as them, but is seperated by a chicken fence. When the others come, I will use the room next to theirs (their coop is actually a large three-roomed building, one is for supplies, another for the hens, and the third unused) for the roosters to share. They can sleep and have sanctuary there, but otherwise are allowed to roam in a large run, limited by a chicken wire fence. So, then can see the girls but not mate with or boss them around unless we need one for breeding purposes. During that time, we'll move the selected roo and hen or hens to a large "breeding pen" which is on the other side of the building.

I like everything organized.

My rooster is with his hens at all times, where he's always been and IMO, where he belongs.
Practice don't ask, don't tell with your city folk neighbor. Maybe it'll never occur to her. Or tell her you only allow the roo mate the hens on the 5th Saturday of every month and throw the eggs away on the next day.

Every single one of my egg customers know I have a rooster and it doesn't bother them at all.
