Please help! We’ve got a rooster (dob April) who recently yesterday afternoon has redness in his eye and hardly opens it. We checked his nose and ears and nothing is blocking anything. He was crowing like normal in the morning yesterday but since the afternoon he’s been hiding from us. He clucks but it’s not often, but it doesn’t sound unhealthy. He won’t come to food or snacks anymore. We lost him for 10 minutes in our yard and found him underneath something but he won’t come to us at all. Third photo is his eye being shut. We have no idea what to do, and can’t afford a vet at the moment.

He could have scraped it against something or another chicken could have pecked it.it doesn’t look inflamed to me so it very likely is just irritated. The behavior is a bit concerning but it isn’t uncommon for them to mope around after something like that happening. Right now I would just keep a close eye on him and look for any signs of sickness or him getting worse.

That’s just my thoughts, @Eggcessive and @Wyorp Rock should be able to help better than I can

Thanks for replying! I don’t think our hens pecked him, they love him lol. I figured he was upset about not seeing through both eyes.

He has some peck marks on the right side of his face and comb. Can you spend some time with him in the flock walking around noting their behavior? Something is going on. Does he have a favorite treat? Does he have shaded cool fresh water? I would offer some scrambled egg, electrolytes, and wet mushy fresh made feed. Check him for any mites or lice. Do his eyes look normal?

I didn’t notice the peck marks, is it the black bits? Also, we bought mealworms yesterday for them and have tired to coax him out to us with them, he tried them yesterday so he knows what they are. We keep a frozen water bottle in their waterer and keep it under the shade at all times, cleaning it daily. I’ll definitely put some electrolytes in the water and try the eggs. His other eye looks completely fine but the right eye is his troubled one. He seems unhappy with that fact that he can’t use it.

He is April hatch date maty be little randy maybe a hen pecked to say No.
Do you have a dog crate put him away from the hens or pullets.
Might take a few days for the eye to go normal.

Just got him to come to us with tomatoes, and he ate some, and pooped a solid basically. He just went to his hens to check on them.

We have a dog crate that he’s been in before so we’ll use it again if he tries to hide from us again, he just came to us after hours
