My largest RIR rooster is sitting in the nest box on eggs. Twice today I went to check on eggs and he jumped out of the box. It looks so funny to see his big head and comb sticking out of the box. Not so funny that both times the egg in the nest has been cracked. It has been in the low 20's today and was 7 last night. I left the light on for heat, but that seems to throw the laying schedule off all day. Maybe he just thinks it is warmer in there. It is supposed to go to 0 tonight. Don't know if I should leave the white light on. (Don't have a red one) It really doesn't generate that much heat and I have 24 birds. Got 14 eggs today from 20 hens.
At least this time there were no eggs in the box. Probably because he is taking up all the space. Maybe its is way of staying warm, but it is one of the three favorite boxes out of six. Chased him again but it will probably do no good. Only cure will be warm weather. Even the chickens are getting cabin fever!!!
) with his head hen last week, she laid her first egg that day! He doesn't seem to care when 2 of my other hens lay, but one of my lower hens started laying last week, and he was in the nest with there again, but if the 2 other hens see her in there, they will peck her out. I guess he's protecting her from the other hens.
