Rooster is a ROUGH lover !

Quote:
He seems to be spreading his loving pretty equally amongst all the girls. They are all missing some low back feathers.
In the beginning he was tearing up their combs, but he seems to off improved his technique enough that their combs
are not getting messed up anymore.

So, do you think there could be a huge personality change as he matures?
He is so good about coming when I call. He listens better than the hens do

I was feeding them some cracked corn out of my hand tonight and he was the gentlest of flock.
He steps back and lets the hens eat and they are way rougher eating cracked corn out of my hand.
The hens are PIGS - - you know what I mean ? ?

I'll have to inspect my girls really good tomorrow.

Everybody has been free ranging in the pigs area for the last week. It has been so HOT that I have escourted everybody to the pigs' pen in the morning and then escourted everybody back to their coop between 4 - 6 everyday. There are so many more places to hide and get out of the sun in the pigs' pen. Plus, there is all that green stuff growing and bugs hopping in the pigs' area.

I'm am hoping the added space and activities will help distract my roo from his "LOVE" mission.

I have the exact same questions and the exact same problems. My chickens are 10 momths old. I really like my rooster and he is a nice, friendly guy except very rough when he mounts the girls. I do not want to get rid of him but also I feel so bad for my bare backed hens. 6 of my 12 hens that have to wear aprons to keep the others from picking their bare backs and to stay warm this winter. He also pulls the feathers right off their heads. My rooster is a light brahma and he is really big and beautiful. I have 5 brahma hens and he only bothers one of them, he mostly bothers the wyandottes and they are smaller than the brahmas.
Have you found any answers that have worked for you?
