i was hoping someone can help me figure out what is going on with my flock. I have 2 Roos and 10 hens that have been together for just over a year now. Happily sleeping in the same coop. Now one of my roosters has moved out! He now sleeps all alone in our second coop. They are connected by their outside enclosure. He is also not hanging out with the group during the day. He does not seem sick or anything. Why is he all alone. Not even 1 hen moved out with him. Any body out there experience this before?

It's really hard to say why exactly.
Could be the other cock pushed him out....
....odd that that would happen after that much time tho.
Seen any fighting at all?
Taking time to observe flock dynamics might tell the tale.
Or he could be ill, chickens don't always show disease until they are very sick.

Yes, I agree with aart, it could be a couple of things. However, what ever the motivation for his departure to the other coop...his absence will surely seal his fate.

The alpha rooster will stay with the hens, and the beta will be evicted since he has removed himself. There may even be some aggression towards the beta from the alpha, as the days pass by. You need to check the beta to see if he is ill. Check his poops for diarrhea, or upper respiratory illness could be a reason. Is he sitting a lot, sleepy during the day and puffed up? Could be an upper respiratory illness at this time of year. Roosters are better at hiding their illness than hens, so do check him out.

If it turns out he is healthy, you will need to give him his own flock. When I had two roosters, there were only 5 hens. So, my beta would spend most of his time with me or my husband, or the dog. But, since the alpha passed away and I increased the size of the flock to 9 hens, he is mostly up at the coop with his wives! LOL!

But, he still likes to come down each day to say "hello" and "got anything yummy to eat?" God Bless and hope all goes well. :)

I will keep an eye on him. Thank you for the advise. He now has one hen living with him. She was injured about a month ago so maybe the second hen house is now an orphanage fur misfit chickens?

Maybe your rooster will become the next "Poodle Roo"!

Ha-ha-ha! If you have time, take a look at the sweet story of "Poodle Roo".

God Bless to you and your flock! :)
