rooster jumps at me

Thanks for all the helpful replies. I took a stick and waved it at him this morning when he came near. He moved away. I told the kids his name is Scary bird so stay away. But I still don't feel comfortable with the kids near. They were holding the hens before the roo got me, and they enjoy that. I've heard roos are tough, so maybe soup. We want to have chicks and are waiting for one of the hens to get broody. The hens we have are red star. Would a silkie rooster mix with them alright??

I don't think waving a stick will deter him forever. I had one that would just attack my DH and after the second spur in his leg, he did away with him. No sense in anyone getting hurt. If that was a child it would have been bad. I have some really sweet roosters and have had a few nasties, all from the same breed so don't think a certain breed or mix is a guarantee of a gentle bird. In my experience, maybe one in ten is a jerk. Just try another, they're not hard to come by.

I have a light sussex rooster that i hatched myself, when he started mating the hens at around 16 weeks old, he become quite nasty.
He started trying to jump up at me and bite me every timme i went in the run, i started carrying a stick with me every time i went in there.
I would use the stick to keep him at a safe distance, if he even looked like he was going to walk in my direction, i would walk up to him and push him away with my stick.
I can now walk in and he never comes near me, and if i walk to where ever he is, he will walk away from me.
So looks like i won that battle with my roo, but i know a lot of people do not have such look with theirs, and no amount of training will make a difference.
I only tolorated mine because i wanted to use him for breeding, otherwise i would not of being able to cope with his behaviour for too long.
Thankfully though it has worked out fine, and if he keeps behaving he stays, if not, in the pot he goes.

Pressure cooker! Then have chicken and dumplings or chicken salad or chicken soup.

My rooster has jumped at me a couple of times but hasn't spurred me. I did take a stick out and for a couple months I had no trouble out of him. Today I was walking close to him and he kind of jumped a little and I kicked at him. I have just learned to keep my eye on him but we don't have small children so it doesn't really bother me.

I myself am new to chickens, have had mine 3 days to be exact, but where my horse used to board they had many and the Rooster was EVIL Rhode Island Red, they ended up having to tie him by the foot to the center post in the coop with a swivel where he could reach food/water/shelter but was not in reach of the nest boxes so you could retrieve eggs without getting spurred.I can't live like that. I am thankful for my birds, I bought them at auction Sat. with a little knowledge of breeds but not much, I knew I was looking for large birds, already laying hens. My friend has Ameracaunas so I know what they look like, as well as RIR, Barred Rocks, and some of the more common types. Bought 4 birds believed to be 3 hens and a rooster. I did not intend to get a rooster but you payed by the head for whats in the box and I wanted the Ameracauna hen that was with him. The Roo I got (after 3 days of research BTW thank you BYC!) Big Beethoven is a Standard Dilute Lemon Blue Cochin. He is very big and barely fit in the box by his self much less squeezed in with the hen. He is relatively friendly, not a pet but not mean in anyway. After getting him home I did notice previous owner has filed his spurs to round nubs, but like I said he is very very peaceful. 1 presumable hen is in fact a Blue Silkie Rooster so that purchase was a fail, but as far as roosters go "Sue" is literally a lapdog! you can tote him around, he is friendly with all the dogs, hens, cats, people ect. the other two are in fact hens already got eggs from both but not sure the breed of one. More research to come. but very very happy with my big roo and 2 hens. Sue will unfortunately have to go do to he doesn't lay eggs. :) Everybody has said Cochins and Silkies are the sweetest Roos and I personally believe them. Beethoven will be here for awhile :)
