Rooster keeps running away into woods

So my rooster - who I've raised since a chick suddenly keeps running away. He takes off into the woods then it takes me 1-2 days to get him back. Today he ran out while I was feeding him and won't make any noise so I can't find him anywhere. He seems to stay within earshot, but he's hard to catch. Any tips to get him to stay in his coop. Tonight it is snowing and below freezing. Couldn't find where he decided to roost for the night. What are his chances to survive and if. He does, what can I do to keep him from taking off again?

I'd try to determine why he is running away and would keep him penned up until I could do so.

I'd try to determine why he is running away and would keep him penned up until I could do so.

I wish I could - any ideas as to what it could be - my hens never leave

I would be worried that there is some sort of predator nearby that he's checking out and he's surviving by roosting in the trees at night. If it were me I would put a trail cam out or sit out there with my rifle in a lawn chair waiting.

I found I had to follow any tree huggers that weren't interested in sleeping in the coop and discover where they roosted. I found they go back to the same spot. So, find where he roosts and put him back in the coop.
A picture of your coop and run and the number of chickens you have might help people make more relevant suggestions.

Unfortunately we are in a town and I can't discharge a firearm close by. Weirdly enough he seems to roost on the ground when I've found him.
