My husband and I are very new to raising chickens and are using a coop at a friends house. 2 days ago one of his tenants went into the coop and kicked our only rooster. He's a great looking Easter Egger but he's not using either of his legs but can kinda flap it's wings. We are going to put it in a portable dog kennel and bring it to the house but I need help on what to do next. It will eat and drink but that's it. Is this a hopelss situation?

Oh my life that's terrible. Why on earth?? Was it waking him? Some people are just plain nasty. I would definitely get it out of there and monitor it for a day or so. If there is no improvement then see what the vet or local chicken store/farmer says. It may just be in shock and needs a day or two but you don't want it to be in any pain so don't leave it any longer than a day or so.

if you flip him on his back, can he move his legs then? Try and gently touch them and pull them forward and back (gently, without forcing) to see if he can offer some resistance or move them. if he does, that would be a plus at this point. If he doesn't and they are limp he might have been paralyzed /got a broken back by this awful person (that your friend should kick out of his house).

It was waking him and for a while he'd jokingly say he was going to kill the rooster. The homeowner called the sheriff last night and threatened to evict him from the property. We will definitely keep him at our house for a while and see what happens. Thanks so much!

that's just awful. I really hope he makes it. You could also try a wildlife rescue center - sometimes they will agree to see the bird and not charge you, or only charge for materials used.

The good news is when I went to feed and water the chickens tonight, the rooster was kinda "duck walking" a little. Good sign! I'll take it right now.
