Rooster laying down, tired, listless

My beloved 8yearold rooster is tired and listless. He hasn't crowed in a week - and he squats down and tucks his legs under him, and just lays there when he's outside. I put Corid in his water, and I can't even tell if he's drinking. (He does eat, but again, so listlessly...)

I also de-wormed him, and he was feeling better for a day - but now back to this.

Is there anything else I can do? I checked him all over yesterday - nothing noticeable. He's comb is very red, and a bit warm. His poop is green and yellow, and a bit runny. He feels a bit thin.

He has moments of "Ok" flapping his wings, etc. but then it's right back to laying down. Should I give him some Baytril?

He is getting pretty old for a rooster. You might want to get some Poultry NutriDrench and give him a few drops up to 3 ml daily for several days. I would mixed some wet chicken feed and offer him some chopped scrambled egg or tuna to tempt him to eat. Is his crop emptying overnight? It would not hurt him to have the Baytril since he is not an egg layer.

Greetings weyermann,

If your rooster's poop is "green and yellow (indicates liver stress), and a bit runny", he most likely has an internal infection. I would stop the Corid, provide fresh water instead. Electrolytes for the first day, would also benefit the rooster.

You mentioned checking him over. Do one more exam on him externally, check for infected wounds and fly strike. Especially, check his vent, to make sure it is not blocked by feces. This is common in roosters. Caked on poop, can also attract flies, which lay eggs, the larva then hatch, and begin to eat the flesh. External infection smells foul. If you find an external infection you'll have to treat that.

If everything looks good externally, no wounds, etc., then, the infection is internal.

If he he feels thin, he has probably been feeling ill for a few days.

Administer the Baytril, 10 days. This is a good broad spectrum antibiotic. Provide good supportive care, as Eggcessive has laid out for you. Vitamins will give his immune system a boost.

If he is too weak to be in with the chickens, he may need to rest in a hospital crate for a day or two, till the antibiotics kick in. Keep him out of drafts, and warm till he is feeling better. Hopefully he still has some strength to recover.

These are my thoughts on your rooster's health issue. I hope I have been helpful.

God Bless :)
