More of a curiosity question than an issue. My little rooster likes to go "buck buck buck buck buck bagawk buck buck buck buck bagawk buck buck" for ages. Why does he do that? What causes it? He also goes "Buck buck BAGAWK!!!!" I can't figure out what he's up to.

What's the little dude trying to convey?

My roosters make this noise when my hens lay an egg. They even go in the coop with the hens one by one and wait until they lay their egg then make the noise while they sing their egg song.

For my 3 boys that is a basic, all purpose “now hear this” type announcement, most often used to celebrate newly laid eggs, but also used for other nonthreatening and non-food-related alerts. Alarms and food elicit different calls. Get used to it, you will likely be hearing it a lot!:thumbsup

What is he and the hens doing when he makes this call?
You can often work out what a call means by watching what the other flock members do when the call is made.

Super duper late reply (life got in the way). His hens are only about a month old. He'll do it while they're just roaming the yard. I can't seem to figure out a trigger for it. It's always in the afternoon when he does it.

He's currently being babysat due to his crowing, but I'll see if I can get a video. I'm sure I've heard this type of noise in cartoons a lot. It's driving me mad not knowing what it is.

Is that correct, just on month old?
If so, still chicks...are you sure they are female?
How old is the male?

Huh.... babysat??

I got them from IFA, I'm not positive on the genders of them just yet. I'm pretty sure I have at least two males, though. The Brats are fall chicks from IFA, Candelabra was born in the spring.

I like hatching babies and raising them, a lot. But I don't have the space for a huge herd. I have a friend who has a ton of land who lets me keep the chickens there. We only manage to meet every few months, though. Candelabra wasn't crowing the last time we met, so I let him stay. He began crowing the very next day. I'm not zoned for roosters, and he was getting impressively loud. I have another (much closer) friend who happened to have some land. They offered to take him and his Brats for me. The idea was that they were going to house them until I could get them to my farm up north (hence 'babysitting') in a few months. But their kids have fallen in love so I'm likely going to let them stay there.

It's a weird situation, but it works. I get my babies (which is helping with my anxiety and is approved by my therapist) and my friend gets chickens for bug control. In return the chickens don't end up being dinner and get to live out a happy chicken life on a 60+ acre farm.
