thanks for all the advice/help. I really appreciate it. I think I will try to go to chickenstock. It sounds like a great idea!

(My dad would love to eat some... but the silkies are too small;) and fuzzy. He teases me all the time.)
 
I also live in Maine- but I have a suggestion to try to shut up your roo that might work elsewhere, too

one of our roosters was constantly waking us up at 4AM. not okay. We started putting him in the old chick brooding box- which is plywood about 4'x2.5'x2.5' at night and putting a heavy blanket over the top so he can't see daylight. (there are air holes on the side.) He certainly doesn't love it, but I love sleeping, so... he's basically lucky he didn't become dinner.
