A rooster with all his natural instincts intact will nest build. They court the females, feed the females, and show them where to lay. My rooster sucks at it, he picks out exposed corners in the coop and the girls blow him off. After he saw where they chose to lay in the nest boxes, THEN he started building in there like it was his idea all along.
But when the girls start cackling about egg laying and pacing in the coop, he goes in there and helps them out. Mine will stand watch and start the egg song before they even laid the egg. He's very involved in the whole egg thing.
