I have a rooster who I found squished in behind a bag of shavings about a week ago. Since then, he has been unable to stand or walk. I think another rooster beat him up. The confusing part is he can still kick like crazy- his legs work perfectly fine! He grips my fingers with his feet too. He can flap his wings very well, he still eats and drinks, he still "talks". He is acting perfectly normal, except he won't stand! His eyes and ears are clear; I see no external parasites; no injuries or soars to his legs. I just don't know what's wrong. I had him crated, but he became upset in there. He is back out with the other birds and simply flops around the coop, carrying on like nothing is wrong. The other roosters have not bothered him since. Here is the other info the site asks for in these types of posts:
1) What type of bird , age and weight: Americana, 8 months old, unknown weight
2) What is the behavior, exactly: perfect range of motion and strength in legs, but unable to stand/walk upright
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? 1 wk
4) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma: no
5) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation: fight with a large Brahma rooster
6) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all: Purina maintenance chicken food; water from our house- drinking and eating well
7) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc: normal poop, but getting stuck to bum since he cannot stand
8) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?: isolation from other birds for a few days but he became depressed, so I let him out again. Kept in warm, dry, clean coop. Offered food and water near him so he would not have to struggle.
9 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? Treat by myself only.
10)pic unavailable- I'm on dial up.
11) Describe the housing/bedding in use: chickens have lived in coop since last summer w/ no problems. 8x12 room. concrete floor w/ plastic tarp cover w/ pine shavings on top. hay in nesting boxes. heated/insulated/no drafts at all. infrared heat lamps fixed into ceiling as heat source (15*C). round wood perch and several tables birds sit on. 10 chickens total- 3 roosters, 7 hens. all other birds are acting normal and healthy.
