Were your roosters feathers always so clearly pointy? Im at about 7 weeks now. Also, the other thing Ive noticed in my golden polish is that a couple that I think are roosters seem to have some bright reddish, rust feathers coming in on their crest and there is some dark green sheen showing on their flank area (sorry, dont know the technical chicken term.). Im not sure if hens have any addl. coloring, but i would think not.
My boy's crest was much more slow to feather in. He still looked like he had a mohawk when the girls' crests were looking puffball-ish. His mohawk feathers were always pointy. I'm digging through my pictures to see if I have a pic at about 7 weeks.
I don't have any experienced with gold-laced polish. I have one buff-laced polish pullet, and she's got a few gold-laced feathers in her side. My parents have a buff-laced pair, and their cockerel is much darker gold colored than the pullet. Their boy's crest also looked like a mohawk for a long time. Mom said that they have a few gold-laced feathers as well. I got their polish and mine all from the feed store on the same day, so they're all from the same hatchery - I think Privett.
I think the gold-laced polish will have a green sheen in their tails, which will be more pronounced in the males. But I'm no expert...
*Edited to add...* No good pictures about that age. Sorry
magsrags and jossanne,
thanks for the pics. It really helps. Im going to take pictures of mine as well, as they develop and post them, so that there are progressive pics of polish crests as they develop. It helps so much to see actual peoples photos rather that the breed standard pics on the websites. Im quite certain mine arent 'breed standard' from a hatchery!!
Today I am actually organizing a timetable for my chicks. They really change an awefull LOT from hatch to first feathering. Amazingly so.
I love my Polish hen. It was Polish or the silkies for me. Being cold here come winter I went with Silkies as they are faring well with the temps so far. Never know though, another Polish hen falls into my lap I won't complain.
