I have 1 rooster with my 28 hens. I have had him as a day old and he was with a bunch of straight run I bought at Rural King. I already had 20 laying hens. He was the calmest and gentlest of the roos I ended up with, so he didn't have to go in the freezer. He is very good around my grandchildren also. I still do not allow the younger kids (5 and under) out around him without an adult though, just in case. My 7yr old grandson loves to just go out and spend time in the chicken coop (he likes to clean everything and collect eggs and pet the hens) and the rooster doesn't bother him at all.
