I asked the other day as a first time chicken owner. If I had 5 roosters and 1 pullet. The pictures were a little blurry so I wanted to verify. One of them crows the others have not

Yep same age. 5 cockerels are hatch mates. That's what I suspected but being as the 5 are Easter eggers and the buff one is a different type I was t sure. They are my first too. What luck lol

Bachelor pad and try for some more pullets for a second flock?😭

J/k, but yeah, 5 for 5 is a rough hatch rate. Maybe you can find someone to trade pullets for Roos? If you’ve got a small backyard flock those numbers are untenable in the worst kind of ways. Even if you got rid of all the cockerels, one pullet alone won’t work.

Fingers crossed for the best for you.

I have 10 black onyx hens that are 6 weeks. These guys are about 14 weeks. I suspected early at least 2 cockerels so I ordered sexed chicks. They are not outside yet. But 10 is still not enough for 5 roosters right? I was going to keep 1 but who I don't know. Trying to find homes for the others.

General consensus is 8-10 hens per roo in a mixed flock, so no, 11 for 5 doesn’t seem like a good idea.

If you’re trying to keep a single breed flock, you may not want to keep any of them. Same if you don’t plan on hatching your eggs at all.

If your fine with barnyard mixes, keep the most personable and hope for the best? At least, that’s what id do.

Ok that's what I had read about. Thanks for confirming. I do have a favorite. We bonded when he was a baby lol. So probably keeping him. I was going to keep a bachelor pad but someone let me know the other day that is risky and not fair to them. So now I'm trying to find them homes

Couple thoughts, prior performance in roosters, much like investments, is no guarantee of future performance. Many will tell you it’s mostly genetics. I think conditioning has a lot to do with it.

Im sure what’s risky or unfair about it. If you could find them homes with a flock of hens who’d appreciate them that’d be ideal. That said, seems like there are a lot worse alternatives than a bachelor pad if you’re willing to tend and care for them for little return other than their company.
