Rooster Ordinance

Thank you for starting this thread. We live in a city where a rooster is considered an exotic animal and allows you to keep 4 hens. It makes no sense, I know. But I am afraid to try to have this changed, as they may decide we can't have hens anymore. Can't wait to see the replies, hope it can help all of us who want roosters.

Most chicken laws do not make any sense but, it's not easy to get them changed. You may want to post on your state thread and see if BYCERS there, will offer advice or rally round you to try and get the rules changed.

I'm sure it won't be an easy task. The animal control officer that came to my house told me that the ordinance came about in response to some complaints about roosters crowing and problems with some ethnic groups who promoted cock fighting. So rather than tackle an abhorrent issue head on the city council took the easy way and banned all roosters. The cock fighting still goes on. Those who promote it have just gotten smarter and keep moving around. I would rather hear a rooster crow than listen to car engines being revved in neighbors driveway and the boom boxes on wheels driving up and down the street at all hours. I hand raised my Roos & I'm not one to give up easily. I appreciate your support!! Sunday I'm meeting with some like minded folk to come up with a plan of action. Will post our progress!:)

Thanks for directing me to the chicken ordinance thread. It has been an interesting week. So far my Roos do not have new homes. One of my neighbors accosted me from the alley while I was caring for my feathered friends. She was there to make sure I knew that roosters were illegal and demanded to know why I got them knowing that they were illegal. Needless to say, the conversation got a little tense. All weekend she has dragged her young son on walks through the alley to check if the Roos were still there. The most interesting occurrence was Sunday when I was leaving home to meet friends. Sunday she not only walked through the alley but in front of my house as well. When she saw me leave the house, she stood on the sidewalk and crowed at me!! My Roos would have been embarrassed to crow like that. I just shook my head and left.
