I have a very handsome and protective roo that pecks at the sky. He just pecks up. Not at anyone. I was wondering what exactly he may be doing and why?

I watched one of my hens pecking at dust motes rising in a shaft of sunlight. No doubt your rooster thought he saw something worth pecking at.
He's likely seeing dust motes floating in the air, high-lighted by the angle of the light beam. Some chickens notice these dust particles in the air more than others, and the behavior does make it appear they are demented.![]()

Just the dust motes floating in the air. The light has to be very low, almost horizontal to the chicken for the dust motes to be visible to them. Out of 22 chickens, I only have one hen that does it.
I will leave it up to you to figure out whether it means the chicken is very smart or very stupid.
