rooster problem

We started out with 50 chicks...raised them up and sold 25 of them. We had 5 roosters to start with, but now have 1. They all had lots of tail feathers missing (the roosters that is) when we got down to 1 it had a few tail feathers left but now has none and the hens peck his booty....what's up with this? My husband has sprayed his booty with tar like stuff and they keep his tail featherless and sore from time to time. HELP he looks crazy without tail feathers, to say the least

Sorry, couldn't resist. I wish I could help but I don't know how you can get them to stop. I have no clue what goes on in their little chicken brains.
