rooster problem?

I have a mixed flock. Some sleep in the coop and some and the roo sleep outside in the pen (enclosed) by choice. I've had the roo a year. The outside gang , ROO included have been attacking my other hens, 3 in particular. They gang up on two of my Polish girls, and the roo runs and pecks my Jersey Giant girls, like chasing them away from the snacks. I've never seen a roo be nasty to hens. Anyone have this happen or heard of it?

We're lucky that our roo (a RIR) is good with our hens and with people. I think it really depends on the individual roo and his disposition/personality. Some breeds are known for more aggressive roos, but when it comes down to it, I think its just like dog breeds... you'll find good & mean ones in the bunch no matter how good of a reputation the breed itself has.

Well, he's a very gentle nice roo with 1 eye. But I guess he's become fixated on 3-5 hens because they all roost together. Right now I'm giving another roo a chance. My last roo last year was perfect in every way, and it's hard to compare to that. But this one should be protecting all the girls, and breaking up hen spats.

Maybe you need to make them all roost in the coop together to encourage them to act as one group instead of two. I'd say wait till it's dark then put the roo and the other hens inside the coop. Watch carefully for fighting or general unrest. And watch them closely during the day. Water pistols are good for discouraging bad behaviour from a distance. After a few days of forced co-habiting they will hopefully all start getting on together a bit better...
