Rooster question

Welcome to BYC. By 'talons' do you mean toenails or spurs? Kelsie has provided a source about trimming spurs. Toenails can be trimmed using a pair of dog toe nail clippers. Trim just as you would a dog's toenails.

If you mean spurs, I use side cutters. I squeeze slowly until I hear it crack then I gently twist it off. same with the other one. It will bleed a little. I put some corn starch on the small spike after you take the shell off. Keep him away from the hens until the spurs stop bleeding. They will continually pick at the blood. You may want to dab blu cote on it so the hens don't see the blood very well. Good luck with your rooster.
