Henry the Rooster still lives, folks!

One of the hens was bitten on the face by a rattlesnake today, and it's wildfire season, so keeping the flock safe is a big concern during summer. But the boy is doing great.

And it's true: Henry is officially a papa!!

If the two week old chicks stay true to the Welsummer breed, then at least two are definitely girls, and at least one is a baby Henry. We're not able to keep any more roosters right now, although I'd sure love to raise them. Hopefully I'll be able to find the boys nice homes.

Meanwhile, I'll see if I can take a family portrait and post a new video. Henry and his wife Gertrude are wonderful parents. :p
Very happy to hear that!:D
except for the rattler bite.

What a double blessing! Henry lived, and brought new life into the world! :jumpy

In case you're curious, eight of the ten eggs had active Henries and Henriettes growing inside. But my inexperience led to some of their demise, sadly.

And now there are five. I'm pretty sure two are girls as of today, and two are Henries. The fifth chick has a hint of a dark chest feather, but it's more like a shadow. I think they're two weeks old (I'll have to double check). In another week I should know for sure.

That Henry the Rooster is one heck of a stud muffin!!

I am so sorry to share this here. It's upsetting, and I'm really beating myself up over a series of decisions I made that led to this.

We had to evacuate because of the Carr Fire.

My dear Henry and his entire flock were left behind. They have lots of water and food, and as of right now we're being told that area hasn't burned. But it would take a miracle for them to survive, not just the fire but also the extreme summer heat.

Please pray for them. I'm devastated.
