Hi! It's been forever since I've been on here, and I wish the first post back was for fun, but I noticed one of my roosters, Cheeto (a Whiting True Blue, around two if I remember correctly, seems to be an okay weight but he is currently molting) is sick and I know that respiratory things can be really bad and some of them aren't even curable.

I've looked up some but I haven't been able to find any that match his symptoms. He's clearly having trouble breathing, making a sort of burbling sound when he does, it sounds wet. He has a small lump swelling on his face below and in front of his eye, but no other symptoms. No runny nose, no goopy eyes, though he's definitely lethargic and doesn't seem to have any appetite. On the first day he was sick and free ranging, he didn't go all the way back into the coop, and I found him roosting with our turkey. He's never missed the automatic door before, so that was my major cue that something was off.

I've isolated him in a barn stall right now, but I only first noticed something off with his breathing yesterday morning, and thought it might just be irritation or something like he'd gotten something stuck in his throat and that it would pass. But then it wasn't gone by the end of the day, so I set up the stall today and moved him.

He's been in with 4 hens, and his coop has a mesh border with another coop with 2 other roosters and a lot of hens, so I'm pretty worried about it spreading. I know some of the diseases can have carriers without symptoms, and I worry maybe that's been the reason for why I haven't found many eggs in there, and not snakes. None of the hens are showing signs of anything.

(Our turkey huffs and wheezes a lot but as far as I can tell that's just how he is, because he's always puffed up with his snood over his nose.)

The coop itself has a dirt floor, a bit muddy. We've been regularly applying peppermint oil spray for snakes, but it hasn't seemed to have bothered him at all before. There's an outdoor area with a little tree, also with a dirt floor. The chickens are usually let out every other day, in rotation with their neighboring flock, but I left them in for around a week and a few days a little bit ago, and only recently let them out again after that, as we recently lost a hen from the other flock and I wanted to discourage a return from the predator.

I have a picture here of the facial swelling, but I don't even know if it's related or not, because the location and appearance didn't match any pictures for disease symptoms. I'm really hoping someone here can help, because he's one of my favorites and one of the oldest chickens that managed to make it through a slew of awful predator problems. Thank you so much!

(Sorry for phone shadow in the picture)

The bump on his face could be a benign cyst or peck wound. It doesn’t shout sinus infection. The inner corner of his eye is prominent, but I don’t see any bubbles or foam. How does the other eye look? Does he have any head shaking or swallowing of mucus in his beak? Gurgles can be rales from a respiratory disease. He might have something going on, but does she sneeze or cough?

Thank you so much! For the bump, I think you're right, I wasn't sure it was related, but I wanted to list it just in case. His other eye seems fine, same prominence, but no foam or anything. I don't know about the swallowing, but I haven't seen him shaking his head around---my two other roosters sometimes do it, but I just chalk it up to them being weird as they've never shown any other issues. No sneezing or coughing, just the sort of raspy choked breathing, which also affects the way he sounds as he clucks. I could probably record it if you think that would be helpful?
Thank you again!

Hi! how is your rooster? did you gave him something? I hope he is ok
So far we haven't as I'm still not sure on what it is, though he does now have a little bit of facial swelling. We've made him an appointment at the vet so hopefully we'll know for sure soon. I'll post their conclusion here as well to make sure people can use it in the future. Thanks for your concern, it's really sweet!

Update for this thread in addition to my other ones in case anyone was wondering or is looking at this later.

We took him to the vet and they said it's almost certainly Mycoplasma Gallisepticum, with his and the hens' symptoms. We're still doing a test to be sure, treating him with Tylan in the meantime. I made another thread about the trials and tribulations of getting my hands on tylan in case anyone is wondering.

Cheeto is being treated and I think he'll be okay. Thank you everyone!

If the vet saw him, you should have been able to get a prescription for Tylan50 or 200 and just ordered it.

Tylan Soluble (Tylosin Powder) can still be ordered online without a script.

Here's your Tylan Thread.
