Rooster sent to "Death Row" - now Coc au vin!

I agree, great video. We had a Silver Laced Wyandotte roo this spring that was a mess. He chase the girls nonstop. The other roos would run over and literally knock him off the girls. We have nearly 60 birds with multiple roos that have all matured this year. We would let the birds out to free range, he would be terrorizing different girls all over the yard. A real mess. I removed him one night from the roost and he never returned. The next day, the flock of free ranging birds were full of an occasional crow, the call of the remaining roosters to the hens about the goodies they found, and contented free ranging hens. Best thing we've done since ridding of ALL roosters last year. I will tell you, our roosters this year are so much better behaved (SLW roo excepted) than last year when they attacked everyone in the family.

Sounds like you did a great thing for your flock!

Rooster became a very lovely Coc au Vin. Since you need a mature rooster to make this classic dish, I just may keep one next summer too past the normal butchering date. I'll just see if I can keep him separate from the hens if he turns into such a bully.

Sorry peeps, I forgot to type before I hit submit that it's not my video, I found it on youtube, but I agree that it is a great video. My roosters are boring when I have the camera out.

I hope I'm not intruding on this conversation but I also have a 8 month old Easter Egger roo who has been a great bird until last week. He has tried to kill 2 of our hens, one a Speckled Sussex and the other is a Buff Orp both are very mild birds probably on the bottom of the pecking order. He chases them all the time and they don't eat or drink due to being scard to move, they stay in or under the nexting boxes trying to keep him away. He has torn all the feathers off their heads so much they were bloody, so I removed him to another coop. He's been a sweet roo for our family but I can't stand by and watch him eliminate my flock, any suggestions beside the crock pot for this young roo or has he went completely mad?

Thanks

If you sell him you might get somebody that will tolerate him until he does that to their hens. Then he's probably going to end up in their crock pot anyways or just straight away. It might be something you should consider for your family (crockpot) unless your vegetarian. You gave the bird a good life I'm sure and now it's just time. I don't think it's behavior you'll be able to train out of him without major investment of time and vigilance. My input only.

This is our first roo, I don't mind making him into nuggets stinks though, he is so pretty and was a good protector, but I agree about his behavior being an issue, I will not risk the flock for one roo, my girls are too much of pets to sit back and watch them struggle.

That's kind of where I was too before I did "the deed". I had chosen this rooster from a 35 straight-run chicks as the one to keep because he was so darn handsome. Now I am doing the "what if" thing about my second choice guy and wondering if I should have kept several until they were older and then only ultimately kept the one that was the nicest to the ladies, rather than the one I thought was the most handsome.

I figured, however that I wouldn't council a sister or friend to stay with an abusive boyfriend or husband, even if he was very handsome

and I wasn't going to subject my poor hens to an abusive relationship that they had no way to get out of.

On the upside, Coc au Vin is very delicious, and since commercial meat birds are butchered way too early to prepare this classic dish, you will have the opportunity to try something few of your friends have experienced.

I've also heard that many local zoos will take unwanted chickens to suplement the feeding of their meat eaters, if you want to get rid of him but don't want to do the deed yourself.

I don't mind doing the deed, I've dispatched many birds before for others but this would be the first of my own flock, but after the torment my girls have been through, I'm ready to see this guy deep fried with a side of hotwing sauce!
I will give the feathers to a local fisherman to tie his flies with because he has awesome coloring in his feathers.
