I have a 1 year old silkie rooster (MaBoi) who suddenly came down with sour crop 2 days ago. Absolutely no warning signs - perfectly happy and healthy one day. Not moving, massive soft leaking crop the next. He has been put in isolation and I am giving him 2ml nilstat daily along with ACV and yoghurt. He is also getting some electrolytes occasionally as he seems weak. There have been no improvements yet, the crop is very slow to empty and he wants to drink non stop (his water is monitored now).

MaBoi is a complete baby and a sook so he will make a lot of noise if he is in pain, scared, etc. and today I noticed he is crying when he poops. I checked the back end when I first noticed he was ill and it was mostly clear with exception of a little bit of poop stuck on his feathers. Today it was more dirty with a little yellowish crusting around his end. His poops are mostly water, unrated and green at this stage as he was withheld food for 24 hrs, didn’t want to eat yesterday arvo but ate some mealworms today.

Could this be gleet? I have never seen sour crop or glees progress so quickly before and be so resistant to treatment. We are on day 3 and still no improvement. What else should I do?

I have never had to deal with that but I have heard that it helps to give a little bit of coconut oil, not melted but in little chunks. I think coconut oil also has some antibacterial properties, so you might give that a try along with massaging the crop gently a little bit to try to get things moving.

Poor little guy is not doing well. He is starting to loose his balance and is very wobbly, dragging his feet when he walks, falling over and using his wing for balance also not really eating. My guess is that he will pass tonight. Can sour crop be fatal this quickly? He was absolutely fine a few days ago, poops normal, chasing the girls, crowing, eating like a pig - then this. I am very confused. His weight also has only dropped a tiny amount since he was wormed a few weeks ago - he is a solid boy.

Sorry to hear this. Hope he gets better. Only thing I can say is we use garlic when our chickens are ill. It's apparently anti-viral and anti-bacterial. If you try this, just note it's related to the onion family, so I wouldn't give him too much. Really hope the little guy feels better soon.

Thank you :) He is such a lovely guy, it would be so sad to loose him. If he makes it through the night I will give him some.

So he is still alive today, but cannot stand or walk. He will eat and drink if it is put in front of him but seems to lack the energy to move for it. Anyone else experienced this before? His eyes are still bright - so I guess that is a good sign.

I'm so sorry....I'm afraid he is dying.

Have you brought any new to you birds home in the last few months?
Have you ever treated for coccidiosis or worms?
Do you know what Marek's disease is?
