Unless he's human aggressive or he's injuring the hens I wouldn't bother. Especially if you're free ranging your birds, it's about as bad an idea as declawing a cat.
I agree, the only time we have ever despured a rooster was after he launched his spur over 1cm into my mums knee
Only do it if he’s aggressive to humans, as if you despur him he will lose trust in you and maybe start trying to attack
To clarify, I think we (or at least I am) are speaking of simply trimming a rooster's spurs, not despurring them.
Trimming them is pretty much the same as trimming a dog's nails, you cut them back a bit but not far enough back where you hit the quick. Done correctly it's not painful for the bird at all. Letting spurs get too long does make it more likely they'll get caught on something, but I don't think it's a huge risk usually
