i just got a new rooster the other day and i think he's about three. his spurs are about a inch and a half long and i have heard people talk about twisting their spurs off. i was wondering if it hurts the roosters or if it is cruel. i just don't want him tearing my hens up.

we clipped ours with garden shears - just dont clip too much! even making them blunt will help everyone.

i have had a few local people here tell me they can be twisted off. the outside of the spur is just a hollow shell and the inner part is bone. grab it with pliers and twist.

Actually the inner part is quick. Like a nail bed. There are no bones in spurs. They can be twisted off, but I would think that would be incredibly painful. Maybe better to cut and file the tip. Rooster spurs are very much like nail beds, ever lost a fingernail??
