My OEGB roo stands over the gals too & will also make a nest for them. What a gentleman!

If I interupt them, the roo starts bawking & then sometimes they go find another place to lay. Goofy chickens!

I finally heard all the BAWKING and I thought someone was being killed!!
I ran outside and told hubby something is wrong with Hoss and he told me " Hoss does that all the time"! I miss everything being at work all the time

The little serama cockerel, (that I posted about on page 1), Curly, and his two serama mates, Naughty Snow White and Sparkle, gave us these over the weekend. Being protective pays off!

I have also heard that the hens are most fertile right after laying an egg, so that's probably why some roos hang around the nest boxes. I have some roos who make a big fuss going into the boxes & buk-buk-bukking to the hens. It seems to me that they're telling the girls "Hey, look what I found, what a great place to lay eggs!" and the hens are rolling their eggs and saying "Gee, thanks for the tip Capt. Obvious!"

Once I had a Brown Leghorn roo who would hang around the coop while two other roos each kept a harem of hens free-ranging around other areas of the yard. But the hens would excuse themselves throughout the day to return to the coop and lay in the nest boxes. When I incubated a selection of all those eggs under a broody hen, they all hatched out looking like the Brown Leghorn rooster! No denying their paternity, that roo knew the best place to stay!

Another time I watched a hen who just laid an egg in the coop and started cackling loudly. I saw a roo run in from the yard and first thought "Awww, he's coming to show her the way to the rest of her flock" but actually, he was coming to mate with this hen.
Watching chickens is fun!

Incubator hatched in a hotel room while attending a poultry show! It has to be a first. Brooded in a styrofoam cooler with a heating pad and a small plastic tray. I worked great!
