Rooster stares at ground when with chick.

Okay, I didn't know where to look for this. Mama and chick were together, and then we put our rooster Fred in with them, as we need them to go all together for a little while as the Chicken Castle gets built...this is what he does...
Here is my question. What is going on? Baby goes up to Fred, and pecks near him on the floor. Fred stares at the floor going almost catatonic. Then he snaps out of it and all is well again. He has done this a few times. What is he doing ?????
 
I look at it as the rooster bonding with the chicks. Mine do that too, and a lot of times, the chicks will peck and pull on their wattles, beards and combs (mine are Silkies, they've got big beards). Mine will also usually tid bit right after (like when they call the hens over for tasty treats they find) and feed them.
 
Oh. Good! Thought Fred was losing his mind! It is so weird to watch. But you are right. Frankie plays with his face. LOL
