Rooster stomping feet at hens?

I have a 19 week old lavender orpington rooster and he's always been a shy boy, but as he's hitting puberty he's definitely getting bolder. My hens aren't at the point where they squat for him yet, so he just chases them and grabs which ever one he can catch to mate with. I also notice when I let the chickens out to free range, he will sometimes stomp his feet. I read that that's a sign of aggression towards a rival, but it looks like he's stomping at one of the hens. This morning, he almost stomped on a hens back! Has anyone heard of this? Is it possible the stomping is towards me and a hen just gets in the way? I do notice that he sizes me up sometimes and it gets me nervous.

My dominant rooster will drop a wing and stomp at the hens; he'll do this to drive them away from me or away from the second-in-command rooster. He also does this as a preamble to mating.
