Rooster suddenly can’t crow, he is trying but can’t get sound out

He declined to allow us to look in his throat, my husband decided that the fight he put up meant he wasn’t that sick 😂. I continued to watch him yesterday, he could make sounds but not crow and he was eating and drinking normally. This morning he is crowing again although you can still hear some junkyness in his crow. I think it’s probably a respiratory irritation/illness. The last few days we have had some smoke return, although not as bad as before

Glad to hear he is doing better! Just a tip if you sneak in the coop at night and nab them they are much easier to catch and handle 😉

I wait a little while for them to be mostly asleep and then use my silly looking red head lamp to examine them on the roost either at night or before daylight. It sounds to me like he may have some residual respiratory problems from the smoke in your are? If he were developing a respiratory infection, you might see nasal drainage, hear crackles in his breathing, cause gasping, or see bubbles in his eyes with possible swelling around the face. There ar a handful of respiratory diseases in poultry, and each one may differ in symptoms. Hopefully, he will get better with some time.

If you’re still keen to take a peak after you see how he does today, take a towel to wrap around him, hopefully from behind as he snoozes on the roost. Have your assistant there with you, with the flashlight. You probably already know this, but if you can get him upside down he might just go limp after a moment.

Good sign that he’s feisty!
I would say give him some chicken noodle soup but that would be in very poor taste, hmmm.

Yeah, no drainage or bubbles in the eyes, I hear some slight gurgling during crowing but otherwise breathing from what I can hear sounds fine.... although I obviously can’t get close enough to listen with a stethoscope.
