My rooster is about 1 year old. Today I noticed his eye is inflamed. No bubbles and no pus inside. I did not see any obvious injury. He is acting pretty normal. I’ll attach photos below. Looking to see if it is contagious. What medication might help him etc.

He does have some frostbite on his comb from earlier this winter. I do the best I can but it is VERY cold where I live.

Update:

I just looked inside his mouth because I saw that can cause these issues and inside his mouth and tongue looked clear.

A swollen eyelid can sometimes be a sign of a respiratory disease such as MG.It could also be a sign of a peck to the eye, or getting something in it. A bee sting would b another possibility. Look for bubbles or foam in the eye. Also look for any evidence of some foreign body in the eye. Is the eye watery? It looks like he has a few frostbitten points on his comb, so perhaps he was pecked.

I did not see anything when I looked in his eye. I only checked the bottom lid so I can look again at the top. I don’t think it’s a bee sting (feet of snow still on the ground 🙄) I don’t think he had any other signs of respiratory illness and once I let him be he let out a big healthy crow. I had to buy terramycin online because my local feed store doesn’t carry it. It will take a few days to get here. Do you think I should pick up some pain killer free Neosporin for it in the meantime? Maybe a saline wash? I have vetricyn spray but not the specific eye kind. I’m not sure I should spray the eye with that in the meantime. Let me know if you have advise.

I also have some Tylosin on hand if you think it would be wise to give that….

You can use saline, the Vetericyn, or plain Neosporin, bacitracin, polysporin, etc. Tylosin can treat symptoms of MG. It might be worth treating for 3-5 days.,

Rooster still has wollen eye. I’ve been treating with Terramycin daily or 2x daily. His eye swelling hasn’t gone down much but he does have his eye somewhat open. He isn’t feeling good for sure. Drinking and eating less than a few days ago.

It’s strange inside his eye you can see the swelling but it doesn’t look like a kernel that can be pushed out. I’ll take a picture tomorrow I just put the eye ointment on.

So they eye looks worse again today. It is not a kernel that you could pop out but rather the inner eyelids that are swollen from what I can tell. It almost looks like big bubbles but they aren’t “bubbles” like you see classic like MG and they aren’t kernels like you would see with Coryza. I’m pretty stumped and I don’t have enough Tylosin for a full round. My feed store doesn’t carry much in terms of antibiotics but I could take a trip just to see what I can get my hands on. I want it to be effective though and it’s hard to know without understanding what’s going on.

Considering a trip to the vet but really would rather not. It almost looks like it needs to be drained. Not sure what to do next the saline wash and Terramycin treatment doesn’t seem to be doing the trick. He isn’t eating or drinking enough which has me feeling like a turn around is unlikely without more help. F209C426-77B9-4FDB-95E1-C004168352DB.jpeg 957005AC-8DC1-4B37-892C-E00EC83F3EDD.jpeg

It does look very swollen. There may be pus around the eye that isn't obvious. I know you don't love the idea of a vet trip, but it may be best in this case since nothing else is helping. Better than him possibly losing the eye. They could rule in or out a respiratory infection, which could cause facial swelling. I've seen birds with foxtails imbedded around the eye that swelled like this, those can be really hard to find and remove. The vet can also prescribe stronger eye drops if needed if infection is suspected.
