Rooster Swollen Eye seeking advise

I did double check the dosage my vet gave me and it is correct for his weight. I’m more of a humanities person so it took me a second 😂
Sorry about that! When I was reading yesterday's posts, I thought there was a question/doubt regarding the dosage amount of what the vet said (a lower dosage) and what you were told here (a stronger dosage). It sounds like you have it sorted out already, though! :)

Update for anyone curious. He is still with us. Not eating or drinking on his own. I’ve been feeding egg yolk and giving water. Today he got some pumpkin seeds too. Finished the 5 days of antibiotics with no improvement. Vet said to go for 7. I am bummed. To make matters worse 1 of my year old hens just developed wry neck. Treating her as well. I only have one isolation crate. To make matters more worse the low temp is 15 degrees tonight so they are both staying in the laundry room. Ugh. My chickens used to be such a joy for me and now I’m not feeling the joy. I also have 9 chicks right now. I had one that was wobbly so I treated with vitamins and after about a week they were walking and getting around normally. I guess you need to take the wins where you can.

Chicks are on Scratch and Peck brand starter.

Hens are on Scratch and Peck Layer because I figured someone might ask.

Has the swelling gone down on his eye? Is his comb still red? Wow, he is a fighter...!
You must be in the far north with those dipping temps? We used to live in northern MI but have since moved a bit further south. Sorry to hear about your hen adding to the convalescent/laundry room. I would make a sign that says "recovery room" and slap it on the laundry room doorway! Gotta love those chickens in the house. You're a good caretaker!

I did! Chicken Hospital is what I went with because my roommate is out of the house and he has a dog as well (it’s my house so my choice haha)

I’m in NW Colorado. It’s going to be cold all week and I’m OVER IT.

His comb is red yes. I honestly expect him to be gone every time I go check on him which isn’t a good feeling. No swelling hasn’t gone down. I should be warm compressing more I guess but he really doesn’t like it which I feel bad about. He was in such good condition before all this started so I’m sure that’s helped his longevity. I think I’ll get some tuna or other tinned fish (no brine) to try to give him and my hen more of a boost. It’s so brutal watching them struggling. I’ve been considering culling but he’s still standing and mulling about. I guess if he stops standing / walking it’ll be time. Once they aren’t eating or drinking on their own it really is so much work.

I'm rooting for him! Your hen, too!
If you have some olive or vegetable oil, you can try putting some around the swollen eye to help lubricate it since he doesn't like the compress. It sounds like that is what he is fighting off, what a strange thing. It's great to hear that he is still up and around. Keep the fluids in him. Let me know how they like the tuna and brine! As if your laundry doesn't probably smell funky enough...lol

Update:

Today is a good day. While I’m aware things can sometimes get better right before the end of life I am going to take it as a good day whether it’s a turn around or not.

Pretty boy is eating and drinking well on his own today. The eye is still swollen but it has been clear for days now without saline flush so I have ceased all eye treatments. I may continue warm compresses with chamomile tea bags occationally to try to help swelling. He will continue to be separated for a while.

Great news about Pretty Boy! I do hope that swelling goes away for him, it looked terribly uncomfortable. It almost sounds like something got deeply lodged in there that may eventually work it's way out.

I’m still leaning towards it was a kick to the face by the head roo but of course that’s possible too. I’ve looked around and haven’t found anything but it’s so swollen it’s not easy to get a good look without causing him severe discomfort. Since he seems to be improving I feel like I will just let it be for the most part.

Thought the hen was a goner today. I was considering culling because she was unable to stand today. I’ve been giving her half a b complex daily along w a vitamin e pill and some egg white. I had stopped trying to give her the vitamin e and selenium gel I have because I was struggling to get her to take it. Today when things were going so far downhill I was like well before I cull I’ll try the paste again. She took it more easily and a few hours later was standing and eating. So I guess I’ll keep trying that and see if I can get any progress.

What kind of paste is she getting?
Also, what was your method of getting her to take the pills? You are definitely now an expert at getting chickens to eat & drink even when they don't want to!
Great work, and hopefully a skill you will never have to use again after these two!

Pretty boy tried to knock my bike over today wanting to roost on it. Oh boy. It’s been moved now but another good sign that he’s getting back to his old self.

I open her beak and pop em in towards the back of her mouth. It’s not easy but you get used to it. Sometimes she pops em back out and it takes a few tries. I don’t know that she will make it through the night. Things were kinda stable at not great but today seemed a lot worse. I’ll give her some egg yolk in the morning if she makes it.

The paste is a vitamin e and selenium gel that’s intended for goats. It’s what I’ve seen recommended here before you only give a pea sized amount
