Rooster troubles!

I am having the same problem with my Rhode Island Red rooster. I just have to be there and he comes flying at me and attacks. It doesnt matter if I am standing still or moving (thought maybe he was taking me walking around the hen as aggression so I tried opening the pen and just standing there) Wrong!! I have kicked him numerous times because thats the only reaction I have when being attacked by him. I am the only one he does this to. He turns and runs from my husband. As far as picking him up and cradling him...no way!! I'd be tempted to snap his neck!! Maybe I will try chasing him around to let him know I am in charge. But the only problem is he doesnt tend to run FROM me, he runs towards me!! Help!!!

Speckledhen, thanks so much for the advice..... being new to roosters, I can use all the wisdom I can get! Now I know what age to cull, how/when to introduce young roos, behaviors to look for.....thanks again!

You're welcome. Some people may not agree with me, but I know what most backyard folks want and what they don't want. Maybe some breeders will live with that behavior in their fancy roosters and poo-poo some of what I say, but in my experience, it really pays to cull for temperament in the long run.

All the above is referencing standard size roosters, who can do real damage when they attack. There are some breeds who tend to be a bit "feisty" in their roosters, like some of the bantams. I have Belgian D'Anvers. When they flog, it's like a tiny puff of wind hitting your ankle, LOL. I rehomed two roosters, one who was a true nasty little devil and one who was a little snot part of the time and the other part, he wanted cuddles-that one liked my friend from KY so I gave him to her.
I kept two, one who ignores me unless I want to catch him or take a picture of him-hates the paparazzi-and one who is super calm and easygoing for his breed, doesn't bite or flog. Though a less-than-two-pound rooster doesn't hurt when he attacks (unless you are bent over and he gets your face, of course, or if he attacks a small child), it's just darn irritating to always have a tiny pitbull at your ankles when you're trying to work in the pen.

IMHO breeders should cull bad tempered animals (of any species). I think it's intirely possible to have awesome looking birds that are a true joy to have around - not a menace to society!

As for ankle-biters: that's funny! hehehe......

Mine are all standards: Faverolles (he's the most aggressive, full frontal attacks), Ameraucana (second, sneak attacks), and French Marans (true gentleman) - I think the Ameraucana is the worst, I can't turn my back on him and I never know when he'll come at me.

Freezer camp........not soon enough :/

Most probably do, especially those who show. Can't have a nasty rooster attacking the judge, right? I'm positive that many would keep a good specimen around even if he was a nasty piece of work just because he was such a good example of the breed as far as conformation goes, though.

Cynthia you know that they do...how many second and third generation roos have we seen that came from a nasty roo turn into complete jackarses? Unfortunately they are gorgeous but just s pure butthead. I say off with his head and be done with it.

After reading this thread, I believe that, unfortunately, I led to my Dominique rooster's demise. I treated him like a pet. He loved, loved, loved me. He loved me too much. He did the wooing dance around me. I now realize that he saw me as one of his hens, and was attempting to put me in my place. We tried to break him of attacking and flogging, but he obviously saw all humans as chickens, since we did pretty much hand-raise him. I see now that I should have installed more respect and a little distance and less familiarity. Ahhh, lessons learned too late! And he was a GORGEOUS thing!

GrandmaChickie, I think that is precisely what happened to the Salmon Faverolles roo I now have.... he dances up to me, or tries to, frequently. When I see him dip that shoulder down, I sort of jump at him, and using my "big girl voice," I scold him for it.... It goes off a cliff from there :( He's actually offered me things with his beak, talking to me like I'm one of his girls.....Not!

However, I was not the one who raised him! I bought him a few weeks ago.
