I have a rooster that is about 15 weeks old. I noticed the other day he was grabbing a few of the hens by their neck feathers and trying to mount them(hens are the same age, none of the 14 have began to lay). He hasn't been successful yet but he keeps trying. He hasn't even began to crow yet. I'm a little concerned that this is a sign he has high levels of testosterone and wonder if he's going to get meaner and meaner once he nears maturity. I have about 4 roosters and I definitely can't keep all 4. This one is kind of special cause he was hatched out of an incubator from my original flock and shortly after he was born a coyote got his dad, my first rooster.

I like roosters, I can deal with some aggression, but I would hate to think I can't even have my friends over for a BBQ without being terrorized.

Well he started trying to crow today. 6 days after the mating. I guess no replies means it isnt that weird. I'm sure it will work out!

I was looking for this exact topic! This morning I caught my 13 week old light brahma roo trying to mount one of the girls and he hasn't crowed yet either. For the past week I have noticed some of the girls with feathers missing on the backs of their necks where the rooster grabs them but I couldn't explain it since I thought there was no way a 13 week old, slow maturing brahma that hadn't even crowed yet would be interested...guess not! I hope it doesn't mean they will be mean once mature, he's my only big rooster and brahmas are supposed to be docile. Maybe someone else with more experience can post once this gets bumped. I'll let you know when mine crows!

Did they turn mean, or did they just have an early start and were still nice to people? Did they treat their hens badly? I think mine has pulled feathers by accident, just because he's inexperienced, but just curious. Ol' Rooster is a nice boy, he just has raging hormones right now I guess lol.

Mine too! My 13 week old is trying to mount! He isn't crowing either. SO FUNNY when he trys to mount Tuesday (year old hen) she sqwaks at him like "what the heck do you think you're doing?" and chases him around the yard trying to peck him. Hilarious!
The pullets that are the same age just let him get away with it.

Oh!!! I cracked open my BO's egg from yesterday and to my surprise it looked to be fertile!!! I'm waiting for another to check it, but maybe little mister is getting the job done!!!
Still no crowing that I"ve heard.
